Depression can still make you want to stay in the shadows, even if you're spending time with loved ones and seeing a therapist regularly. Fortunately, there are a number of things that can help alleviate the unpleasant effects of this unhealthy condition. When you're depressed, there are a number of things you may do to lift your spirits.




Activities to do in the Outdoors to Treat Depression

A wonderful method to lift your spirits is to get some exercise and fresh air. An afternoon spent sipping coffee in your lawn can do wonders. There are a slew of enjoyable outdoor activities for depression that you can engage in on your own.

  • Reading in the park. Being surrounded by a large group of people can provide a sense of community and reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Simple activities such as reading and snacking in the park can help alleviate symptoms of depression.

  • Gardening. Depression has been shown to be lessened when people work with plants, especially if they do so with their hands. It aids concentration and prevents your thoughts from wandering to negative or depressing ones. To top it all off, you'll feel good about the end results. Begin with a few plants on your windowsill or patio and see how you like it! You might also consider renting a parcel of land to grow your own garden or becoming involved with community gardens as a volunteer.



Experiencing the great outdoors doesn't necessitate being immersed in the natural world all the time. Depression can make it difficult to do anything at all, including getting out of bed. While getting outside and spending time with family and friends has many benefits, if you don't have the energy to do so, there are many things you can do at home when you're feeling down.

If you're depressed and stuck at home, what can you do to lift your spirits? Creating something with your hands can lift your spirits because you get to see the finished product and feel proud of your accomplishments. The following are examples of possible activities.


  • Cooking. Preparing your own food is a great way to stay busy, be creative, and have a satisfying dinner at the same time. If you've never tried a recipe before, give it a go. Bake a pie or a batch of your favorite cookies if you like to cook.

  • Reading. Getting lost in a good mystery novel or immersing yourself in ancient history can be a great way to relax. With so many books on so many subjects, you're sure to find one that interests you, and reading is an excellent way to get your mind off of things while also keeping your body active. Newspapers, magazines, graphic novels, and comic books are all acceptable forms of reading.

  • Craftsmanship.You can express yourself through creativity even if you don't intend to, and it can help you even if you don't know it. Depression can be treated with creative outlets such as writing, pottery, and sketching. When you're engaged in a task that needs your complete attention, such as producing cards or knitting or embroidering, you're less likely to allow yourself to be distracted by negative thoughts.

  • Games. If you're suffering from depression, playing video games and solving old-fashioned puzzles can help you get your head back in the right place. A recent study found that playing casual video games can help alleviate stress and despair. You can improve your problem-solving abilities and boost your creativity by playing video games or solving puzzles.
